Where Do I Find Antique Plates?
Written by Jake on September 22, 2008 – 9:42 am -The age old question and I guess the basic of questions when it comes to License Plate Collecting. Where do I find all the plates I’m looking for?
There are so many resources on the internet these days, but the internet wasn’t always available. Imagine how hard it was to build a collection before the days of the information highway! We do have this wonderful avenue called the internet that helps us find our treasures, but we thought we would list some of the more popular places people find these wonderful collectibles.
- Junk Yards - Yes you may be surprised at what you can find in a junk yard. Imagine drudging way back to the rear of the junk yard. Back where the cars have been sitting for years with weeds grown up around them. Then you happen across an old car and low and behold the plate is still on it. There have been some great finds at junk yards.
- Dumps - It always amazes me at what some folks will throw out. Of course some facilities don’t allow scavenging, but some do! How many times have you went to the dump and while your emptying your trash, you see where someone has thrown away a perfectly good item. Of course the chances of finding a License Plate at the dump may be slim, but it has happened!
- Scrap Yards - Along with dumps, scrap yards are the places where the unwanted stuff ends up. If you’re like me, your basement or garage fills up with everything imaginable. Sometimes I’ll take a Saturday and back the truck up to the door and start tossing. Some of those items are things I may have held on to, thinking they may be worth something someday. AND, I could have thrown away something that did have value but was tired of seeing it on the shelf or was too lazy to find out the value. That’s how items such as Antique License Plates end up at the scrap yard. Someone tosses it, thinking it’s just scrap, but it could be that one Plate you have been searching for to finish your collection. Or it may be a rare Plate worth thousands!
- Swap Meets - Swap meets have become more and more popular over the years. And just a note, when we have a chance, we will be adding posts and categories listing all the swap meets around the country. Swap meets can be an exciting adventure. License Plate Collectors from all over gathering in one place to show, swap, buy and sale License Plates.
- Flea Markets - Kind of the same thing as a swap meet, but not really! HA. Flea markets are huge in our part of the country and you can find just about anything at a flea market. And I mean anything! But you may just happen across a table at a flea market and find a special Plate just waiting for you.
- Antique Shops - Again we have many antique shops in our part of the country. You will more than likely find several Antique License Plates when you visit an antique shop. But, I also think you may pay higher prices from those type places.
- Ebay - Of course we can’t make this list without adding the ever popular Ebay as a great source for finding some of the greatest treasures available. Obviously our License Plate Collector website is a wonderful and unique collection of many types of Collectible License Plates. To me, this has made License Plate collecting so much easier and has taken it to another level. With Ebay you can find great plates at great prices and one of the best parts, you can shop from home! No driving around the country, no digging through the dumps or scrap yards.
We would love to hear your stories about finding plates and where you found them. We know there has to be many interesting stories out there.
